WORKS are underway to upgrade a popular BMX club's track thanks to two council grants.

Burnham BMX Club, which is based next to Apex Park, is closed while it refurbishes its facilities and upgrades its track to make it a safer and more accessible venue for its riders.

The works are being funded by a £4,000 grant from Burnham and Highbridge Town Council and a £2,000 grant from Sedgemoor District Council and they will be completed by Saturday, June 22.

Michelle Fryer, secretary for Burnham BMX Club, said: "We are putting the money towards resurfacing parts of the track, improving some of the jumps and making the track safer for our riders.

"We are also going to be giving some of the signs and fences around the track a bit of a facelift as they look dated and old and make this a brighter space for our members to come and ride.

"We have around 40 members who regularly use our track and they can be anything from novices to pro riders.

"We want to improve our track so that it is not only safer for riders but so it can challenge everyone who uses it and help them with their training.

"We received £4,000 from the town council and Sedgemoor District Council gave us £2,000 as they match funded us 50 per cent of the money which we are very thankful for as it is great for us to make these improvements."

Caroline Diamond from Burnham BMX Club said the club has plans to replace the starting gates and signs at the track in the future and the club is looking for new members.

She said: "After we have completed the works to the track we would really like to replace the starting gates as they are getting old but this will cost us about £10,000 so that will take a lot of fundraising.

"We would also like to get some new signs as they are dated and do some works to the clubhouse to make it a brighter place for our members.

"We are looking to expand the club and get some new members in. Anyone of any ability can join the club and it would be great to see more people joining our club."
