A CALF stuck in a river has been rescued by firefighters and returned to its herd.

A specialist rescue vehicle was sent to the incident near Crandon Bridge, on Bath Road, Knowle, Bridgwater, at 10.40am.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "On arrival at the incident crews confirmed the calf was stuck in the river and donned dry suits to perform the rescue.

"Crews used specialist equipment and manual handling techniques to rescue the calf from the water.

"Once the calf had regained its strength it was returned it to its heard."
