“BEING a dad I understand how hard it can be sometimes to ask for help so I wanted to set something up where no one would be judged.”

Those are the words of Damien Crane from Bridgwater who along with his partner, Kylie Crane, set up an online cooking group, Grilladads, to help parents learn how to cook quick and healthy meals for their children.

The 30-year-old father of two, who works for the YMCA in Burnham-on-Sea, said he was inspired to create the group after seeing there was not a lot of information out there to help parents cook healthy meals for their children.

He said: “Being a dad I understand how hard it can be sometimes to ask for help so I wanted to set something up where no one would be judged but also so I could share some of the fantastic dishes they can make.

“I spoke to my friend Chris Perks who’s a chef about the idea and my son’s godfather, Matt, who also has a passion for cooking and from there we set up the first group, Grilladads.

“I can cook but my knowledge is very basic so I wanted to make sure that the administration team was built with people with knowledge and people brave enough to experiment with cooking ideas.”

Damien said the Facebook group, which launched in February, now has more than 220 members and he received so many requests from women to join that he set up another group, Grillamums, in April.

The father of two said people from across the world have joined the group and he is hoping to launch a YouTube channel in the future.

He said: “I’ve had a few ideas, we have been in discussion about setting up a YouTube channel so we could do some help to cook videos.

“I would like to do some videos for cooking on a budget and for people with very little money who may be living on foodbank donations.

“I worked with some asylum seekers and they would make some amazing dishes literally out of nothing.

“They would never tell me how but it would be great to show people to not be afraid of a little creativity.

“We have had a lot of people from Burnham-on-Sea join the group which is great.

“I hope the group will offer people a space to be able to learn new things and feel comfortable to be able to ask questions no matter how silly they think they are.”
