FIVE dog owners including two from Burnham-on-Sea have been issued with fixed penalty notices by dog wardens.

Sedgemoor District Council's dog wardens issued two fixed penalty notices to dog owners on Burnham Beach - one owner was fined for not picking up his dog mess and another was fined for having a dog in a prohibited area.

The district council is reminding dog walkers that there is a year-round dog ban on Burnham-on-Sea beach between the Jetty and the Pavilion and it is an offence to take a dog onto this part of the beach at any time and the fine is £75.

Three fines were also handed to dog owners in Wembdon after they ignored signs which states dogs should be on leads.

A spokesman for SDC, said: "There is clear signage in place to show the banned area.

"Dogs are allowed between the Jetty and the Yacht club and from the Pavilion to Maddocks Slade between September to the end of April each year.

"Sedgemoor’s dog warden service are stepping up patrols in hot spots and will continue to undertake random patrols on beaches and will issue fixed penalty notices to anyone contravening the regulations, so pick up the poo rather than a fine."

Fixed Penalty Notices are £75; there is a reduction to £50 if paid within 7 days.
