THE fire service has shown its appreciation for a Highbridge building merchant by presenting them with an award to thank them for supporting a firefighter.

Firefighter Steve Pike and Ian Hazleton, station commander for Highbridge Fire Station, met with Mervyn Lavender, branch manager of Jewsons last week to present the firm with a Chief Fire Officers Certificate of Appreciation to thank them for releasing one of Burnham-on-Sea's on-call firefighters for emergency fire calls.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said: "This is in recognition of the contribution made to the community by releasing one of our On-Call firefighters from their primary employment with them, to attend emergency fire calls as part of the Burnham Crew.

"The support of local employers like this is imperative for us to maintain an emergency response for the community.

"We are currently recruiting - so if any other businesses have staff that could take up the challenge of becoming an on-call firefighter, you could soon be receiving your own certificate.

"Thank you again to Jewsons."
