A BURNHAM resident has hit out at 'boy racers' causing disturbance in one of the town's main car parks late into the evenings.

The resident, who lives in Maple Drive, said the 'boy racers' are driving recklessly in the Pier Street and B&M car parks along the seafront.

Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed they reports of anti-social behaviour had increased in recent weeks.

A police spokesman said: “We’ve seen a small rise in anti-social behaviour around B&M Bargains car park in Burnham recently.

“We have increased patrols as a result as well as carrying out speed checks."

The Maple Drive resident said that the behaviour was intimidating for vulnerable residents and left some 'frightened to come out of their homes at night'.

"They drive around the car park so quickly and leave skid marks all over it - it won't be long until someone is killed," the resident said.

"I moved here eight years ago and the situation has been getting worse in the last couple of years."

B&M Bargains opened on the former Morrisons site in September 2016 and said it had been in contact with Sedgemoor District Council regarding the situation.

A B&M spokesperson, said: “The car park is managed by the council, we have requested barriers to deter misuse but unfortunately they’re unable to provide them because the car park is also used as an overnight parking spot for truckers and caravans.”

Sedgemoor District Council said it had looked at the situation however gates at the entrances were not a 'practical solution'.

A Sedgemoor District Council spokesperson said: "The Pier Street car park is used legitimately by members of the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"Gates at the entrances are not a practical solution.

"A new CCTV system operated by Sedgemoor District Council will shortly be in operation at Pier Street car park.

"This will assist the police in identifying and apprehending offenders."

The police are encouraging people to report any suspicious activity or information via 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
