THE world-famous Christmas markets in Vienna have been left in the shade by Taunton's Rural Living Show.

That was the verdict by one of the thousands of visitors to the two-day event staged at King's Hall School at the weekend.

A record 3,900 people attended the 25th annual extravaganza on Saturday, with a steady flow of visitors the following day.

There were thousands of Christmas present ideas over both days at the 140 stalls, ranging from crafts to clothes and food to toys.

Entertainment was provided by Wivey Ukelele Group's flash mobbing, morris dancers and drummers, while the Military Wives sang at a party on Saturday evening that was attended by several former Taunton Deane Mayors.

The event raised money for the Children's Hospice South West.

Organiser Louise Walker said: "It was our busiest show so far and exhibitors have been e-mailing to say how wonderful it was.

"It was a fabulous two days - just amazing and the event's gone from strength to strength.

"I'd like to thank everyone from King's Hall to the Children's South West, my staff, stall holder and the visitors.

"One of them said it's the best Christmas event they've ever been to, better even than the Viennese Christmas Markets as it's more diverse and simply unique.
