A POSTMASTER has made a dramatic u-turn since announcing he would resign casting doubt over the future of Highbridge Post Office.

The Post Office said they would be temporarily closing on Wednesday (October 11) following the postmaster's resignation.

However, news broke today (October 12) that the branch on Church Street would be closing permanently on October 24, which shocked councillors and residents.

The Post Office then released a statement this afternoon saying they had found a number of businesses who could house a new branch.

But in a complete u-turn the Post Office has announced the branch will no longer be closing after a dramatic 24 hours.

A spokesman for the Post Office said: “The Postmaster for Highbridge has decided not to resign as planned and the branch will not be closing on 24 October as expected.

"We will be supporting the Postmaster to help develop the retail side of the business.”

Highbridge MP James Heappey says he is delighted the Post Office in the town will no longer close following yesterday’s announcement, which was met with concern from residents.

The Post Office was set to temporarily close on October 25 due to the resignation of the operator.

However, Mr Heappey spoke with the Post Office’s Head of External Relations and a deal has since been struck to extend the operator’s notice period by six months.

This means the company has more time to find an alternative operator to take over the site.

Mr Heappey said: “I am thrilled a deal has been secured to ensure Highbridge’s Post Office stays open.

“I look forward to working with the Post Office to ensure a long term service remains in the town.

“Everyone should be clear that at no point was the Post Office withdrawing its service from Highbridge. This was a contractual issue and I look forward to seeing a Post Office in Highbridge for many years to come.”
