Traffic is grinding to a halt across Somerset due to a number of incidents on the roads.

Drivers face lengthy queues heading into Bridgwater on the A38 due to heavy traffic on the M5 northbound.

There is severe congestion on the M5 northbound between junction 27, for Tiverton, and junction 21, for Weston Super Mare – travel time between the junctions is about one hour and 20 minutes.

With motorists trying to avoid the motorway delays, there is now congestion on the A38 between North Petherton and Bridgwater.

Traffic is also heavy on the M5 southbound between junction 14, for Thornbury and Weston’s junction 21.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said there are no live incidents and said the delays is likely down to 'Friday traffic' and bursts of heavy rain.
