SIXTH form students at King Alfred's School celebrated an 'outstanding' set of A Level results with many heading off to leading universities across the UK.

The students were the first year group at the school to face the newly reformed A Level examinations which are based on final assessments in their second year and many of the students surpassed thier expectations and secured great results.

Denise Hurr, headteacher at the school, said: "We are very proud of the achievements of our students who have all worked incredibly hard with the support of our staff.

"Their hard work has paid off with fantastic university and employment destinations for our students.

"We believe that our sixth form provides an excellent standard of education for the young people of Highbridge, Burnham-on-Sea and the surrounding areas."

A number of students achieved top grades including Isobel Bolitho, who attained A*AA and secured a place at the University of Manchester to study Biology.

"I was very excited when I opened my results.

"I have worked really hard this year so I am really happy to have got a place at my first choice university."

Another student who was excited on results day was Izobel Woolley.

Izobel was unwell for most of the year in the lead up to her exams but didn't let that stop her and she secured a place at Bath Spa University to study marketing after achieving a distinction star, a B and a C.

"I would have preferred to have got higher grades but I am really happy that I got my first choice university.

"I wasn't in school very much this year due to illness and I feel really proud of my grades.

"When I called my mum and grandma they cried on the phone, they were so proud of me."
