AN appeal has been launched to pay for the conversion of a former pub into a hostel for one-time service personnel.

Taunton Association for the Homeless is starting work later this summer on transforming the ex Victoria Arms, on East Reach, into a home for veterans.

The charity's chief executive said the premises, currently used as its offices, will be adapted to offer "specialised support" in "a safe place to live with access to the support they need".

Justin Roxburgh, who said around one in ten homeless people are veterans, added that the project will create eight bedrooms, four with wet rooms, and facilities for wheelchair users.

He added: "Although we have funds to get this project started, we are looking for further support to ensure we can provide the best possible service.

"People's financial contributions will mean that we can get this project running sooner rather than later, and provide a comfortable and safe space with professional care for homeless veterans."

TAH office staff is relocating from the East Reach building on Wednesday to cheaper premises in The Crescent ahead of the conversion work.

To support the project, make a donation here or into TAH's Lloyds account at 00411487, 30-98-45 with the reference ‘veterans’, or post a cheque to TAH, 7 The Crescent, Taunton, TA1 4EA.
