A BURNHAM-on-Sea care home says it is launching a 'rigorous action plan' after receiving a poor CQC report.

The Burnham Nursing and Residential Centre has received a 'requires improvement' rating after an unannounced CQC inspection in August revealed shortcomings in the the care home.

In their report, the CQC said they had fears the staff were not properly trained in safeguarding and residents were concerned about staffing levels in the home.

"Most people we spoke with were concerned about staffing levels in the home.

"Although we observed staff to be rushed and people told us they waited sometimes, they were happy with the care they received and interacted well with staff.

"Experienced staff had built good relationships with people.

"The managers had developed links with the community.

"Although staff received training, some staff we spoke with did not understand their responsibilities around safeguarding.

"Staff received training for other topics, such as manual handling, but had not received support via supervision through a time of significant change."

The home houses 54 people who need nursing care as well as a specialised floor for patients with dementia, upon inspection just 43 people were living at the home.

"There had been a number of changes in the management team since our last inspection.

"This had led to a period of inconsistency.

"Everyone we spoke with felt the new, temporary managers were making positive changes and the service was improving.

"People, and those close to them, told us they were not involved in planning and reviewing their care and support after their initial meetings when they moved in to the home.

"Care staff did not have access to people's care plans because they didn't have access to them, so relied on information being passed to them from the nurses."

But owners of the Burnham nursing and care home, County Court Care say they have an action plan to combat the issues highlighted in the report and are investing £1million in a long term refurbishment project.

Alykhan Kachra, Managing Director of Country Court Care said: "We were fully aware of compliance issues with the home prior to Country Court Care taking it over and it was in need of major capital investment.

"We are encouraged that the CQC acknowledged improvements we have already made within their report, even commenting ‘…everyone we spoke with felt the new, temporary managers were making positive changes and the service was improving'.

“We had already started to put in place changes at the home prior to the latest CQC report and continue to work closely with them and the Local Authority to ensure that everyone is fully informed of our plans

Ken Bishop, Home Manager at Burnham Nursing and Residential Centre said: "“I am very happy to be managing The Burnham Nursing & Care Home, I’m a family person and I love the family atmosphere here at the home, Country Court Care is a very family orientated business.”

“We’ve got exciting plans to expand and continue with the fantastic care offered here at The Burnham.

"I’m lucky to be working with a great team of carers and support staff here at the Home”.
