BURNHAM-ON-SEA firefighters were called to help fight a large farm fire in Othery.

Two fire engines from Bridgwater were originally sent to North Lane at 8.49pm on Sunday night to reports of a fire involving a lean to and tonnes of hay at a farm, and were still fighting the remains of the fire at 2pm yesterday.

Four further engines were sent from Bridgwater, Street, Somerton and Taunton along with the incident command unit as the barn was well alight.

More foam had to be sent from Bridgwater and shortly after 10pm, the roof of the barn had started to collapse.

The welfare pod had to be sent from Burnham-on-Sea with hot packs and refreshments for the firefighters.

Crews worked through the night to protect the barn, which contained approximately 100 tonnes of hay.

Two fire engines were sent as relief crews from Glastonbury and Taunton.

The firefighters worked to protect the farm buildings and silage pit, and allowed the hay in the barn to burn under supervision.

At 6.25am a two further relief crews were sent from Martock and Taunton.

Crew members were still in attendance damping down the hay at 10pm on Monday night.
