ANOTHER police chief has been appointed in Avon and Somerset after the previous top cop retired. This after the official man in charge remains on gardening leave. The new chief is Gareth Morgan who replaces stand-in John Long who retired on Monday. Mr Morgan will do the duties for Nick Gargan who has refused to resign or quit following an investigation into his behaviour.

The issue of Mr Gargan is a headache for the force's police and crime commissioner, Sue Mountstevens.

Taking the job Mr Morgan said: “"I recognise the trust that has been placed in me to undertake the role of temporary chief constable. I came to Avon and Somerset nearly a year ago and every day during this time I have seen outstanding officers and staff serving their communities in the finest traditions of British policing, doing their very best in often difficult and challenging circumstances.
