Somerset residents are invited on a trip aboard the world's last sea-going paddle steamer from Minehead to Ilfracombe this September.

The Waverley is a historic ship which dates back to 1947 that has been restored with towering funnels, timber decks and gleaming varnish and brass.

On Saturday, September 5 the boat will set sail from Minehead Harbour taking passengers to Ilfracombe in Devon.

This is the 40th year that the Waverley has sailed in preservation after being sold by Caledonian MacBrayne for £1 in 1975.

The ship's captain Andy O'Brian said: "We are very much looking forward to bringing Waverley to Minehead and welcoming passengers aboard in this special year."

The ship annually carries 130,000 passengers on trips around Britain and an independent study found that the ship, which is now run by a charity, contributes £5m to the UK economy.

Prices start at £27 for adults, under 18's pay half fare and children under 5 go free. Tickets can be booked by phoning 0845 130 4647 or online at www.waverleyexcursions.co.uk.
