PUPILS at a Bridgwater school are reading a new ‘tail’ – thanks to Leo the dog.

The giant Leonberger has been joining weekly reading classes at St Joseph’s Primary School in Park Avenue.

Head teacher Helen Taylor said Leo, whose owner, Beryl Fitz-Hugh, is a member of the charity Pets As Therapy, has become a favourite with pupils.

“The children love to read to Leo, who is very patient and listens intently,” said Mrs Taylor.

“It has had a remarkable impact and the children look forward so much to his visits.”

Pets As Therapy is a national charity which provides therapeutic visits by dogs and cats to schools, hospitals and nursing homes.

A spokesman said: “Research has shown children can be nervous and stressed when reading to others in a group, but when a PAT dog enters the group the child becomes less stressed and less self-conscious.

“Before long the children are looking forward to the reading experience as they’re going to read to their new friend.”
