THIS year’s Bridgwater Flower Show looks set to flourish after organisers were selected to receive a donation from a local historic association.

The show has received a £250 grant from the Bridgwater Agricultural Society which aims to promote agriculture and horticulture in the town.

Organisers of the flower show say the funds will provide a great boost to this year’s event.

Jackie Sealey, Bridgwater Flower Show secretary said: “We’re very grateful to the Bridgwater Agricultural Society for the grant.

“We rely on grants and donations to be able to fund the show each year. “We have managed to buy some new stands over the past couple of years and now this money will ensure that we don’t have to struggle with the old stands anymore.”

Mary Adams, secretary of the Bridgwater Agricultural Society, said: “We are delighted to include Bridgwater Flower Show in our selection for this year.

“This is an area where all ages and abilities can join in, not just on the horticultural side, but alongside country skills such as wine making, crafts and home cooking.”

The flower show has been running for more than 100 years and relies on a mixture of self funding from committee members and sponsorships from local businesses and organisations.

In 2013 organisers of the flower show were worried that the event, which has been running for more than 100 years, may not be able to continue due to a decline in membership.

“We lost a lot of committee members all at once and so it was a real struggle to raise the funds for the flower show.

“However we get a lot of help from local businesses and thankfully we’ve been able to keep going.

“We would always welcome new members to help make sure the show can continue for another 100 years.”

The Bridgwater Flower Show will take place on August 28 and 29 in the town hall.
