A BURGLAR who stole a handbag, cash and an iPad from a Taunton home, while a mum and her two young children were inside, left empty-handed when the woman bravely confronted him.

At Taunton Crown Court today, Trevor Sweeney was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of burglary following a trial.

The court heard how Sweeney, 39, from Taunton, entered the home in Cashford Gate in the early hours of July 3 last year, stole the items and then attempted to escape.

However, the home owner saw Sweeney and followed him outside.

After an altercation, she managed to recover the property.

An Avon and Somerset police spokesman said: “DNA evidence identified Sweeney, who had denied the offence throughout. He admitted only to finding the items outside.”
