POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man suffered a broken jaw in a late-night assault in Burnham.

Joe Mooney had to have metal plates inserted in his face and needed stitches to his right eye as a result of the attack.

He had intervened to break-up a fight between two men and two women, and was sitting with a friend when he said the men turned on them.

“All of a sudden I was on the ground and being hit, but I didn’t realise at the time my jaw was actually broken,” said Joe.

“They were hitting my friend and myself, and I just shouted at the guys that this was crazy.

“We managed to get away.”

Joe was taken by ambulance to Bristol Royal Infirmary where his injuries were treated.

He said: “I had seen the two guys fighting and I went over to stop them.

“They seemed to calm down and I walked away thinking that was that, but they then turned on my friend and myself.

“I’m not the sort of guy who holds a grudge.

I’d rather just put the whole episode behind me and move on. “Burnham’s a nice town and these sort of things are unusual.”
