THE launch of this year's Somerset and Bristol Poppy Appeal will be taking place on the West Somerset Railway.

This year, the theme is 'The Evacuation' and 350 members of the Royal British Legion, poppy organisers, collectors and other volunteers will be taking a trip on the Railway on Friday (October 24).

The journey from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead is to highlight the start of the local poppy appeal, which helps to fund the work of The Royal British Legion.

This year marks 100 year since the birth of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance and hope.

The train will be displaying a huge Poppy on the front and the coaches will also be decorated with poppies.

Minehead Railway Station is being specially 'dressed' for the occasion and the stations along the line will also have Union Jack bunting and Poppies.

Alistair Maxwell, area manager for the Royal British Legion in Somerset said: “As we mark the Centenary of the First World War, it's as important as ever to wear a poppy and remember the sacrifices and commitment made by our Armed Forces both then and now.

“The message behind this year's Poppy Appeal is Live On - to the memory of the fallen and future of the living, which captures perfectly why it's so important to donate to the appeal and wear a poppy.

“Every donation received will make a real difference to the lives of Service men and women, veterans and their loved ones.

“The fundraising target in Somerset and Bristol is £1 million which will go towards the Legion's national target of £40 million to continue its vital work delivering practical, through life care and support to the Armed Forces community.”
