BURNHAM’S successful summer lighthouse trail came to an end on Sunday, having raised more than £8,000 for charity.

The grand total was revealed by Highbridge and Burnham Artists (HABA) during an event to thank the supporters of the scheme and those who bid on the 34 replicas of the town’s iconic lighthouse at an auction.

The group presented a cheque for £8,053.39 to children’s cancer charity Petal.

The Burnham-based charity was set up in memory of Christine Woodberry who died in 2008 after a battle with ovarian cancer.

Around half the funds were raised by the sale of the lighthouses with the rest coming from collections around the trail.

HABA oversaw the project and the lighthouses were built at Woodberry Brothers and Haines in Highbridge, which provided the materials and workshop space for free.

HABA committee member Lesley Filce said: “The amount that was raised well exceeded our expectations.

“We would like to thank everyone who took part, including Woodberry’s, the sponsors and supporters who walked the trail.

“We all muck in together and our aim is to bring art to the community.”

A raffle held on the day was won by six-yearold Noah who had found the roaming lighthouse each week as it was moved around the area by Lesley and her husband David.

HABA is now producing a 2015 calendar of the lighthouses which is set to go on sale later in the year.
