Bridgwater College students to conduct research at Steart wetlands

This is The West Country: Adam George and Tim McGrath pour over plans. Adam George and Tim McGrath pour over plans.

AN EXCITING new collaborative research project is starting at the new wetlands wildlife reserve at the mouth of the River Parrett.

Bridgwater College is partnering up with Oxford Brookes University and the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust (WWT) to facilitate joint research on the new Steart wetlands.

Planning permission was granted two years ago to create this wetlands area and this partnership will allow Bridgwater students to study the environment and wildlife there.

Adam George, Oxford Brookes PhD student, has been appointed as a coordinator for the three organisations, and will also teach on the College’s Animal Conservation programme at its Cannington Centre.

Adam said: “Wetlands provide protection from flooding and offer temporary or enduring habitats for a diverse range of flora and fauna. Therefore, the aim of my research is to deliver valuable data that can facilitate the management of Steart Marshes and other wetland habitats.

“Working for Bridgwater College will provide me with the opportunity to involve students in this project, where they will learn valuable skills and contribute to this important area of research.”

Tim McGrath, from WWT, said: “WWT Steart Marshes is designed to be a working wetland, rich in wildlife, supporting farming and protecting the local community from rising sea levels.

“WWT want reserves like Steart Marshes to demonstrate how creating wetlands can solve many of the problems we’re going to face in the future. This PhD will provide an important piece of evidence in making that case.”

Blue Owl says...

It would be Certainly Exiting and Extremly Worthwhile if instead of Studying the Wild Life Flora and Fauna. ..............Which obviously contributes to the Balance of our Eco - System. I Sure the Birds and the Beetles on the Estuary, will be there long after our Residents have been Forced to leave their Natural Habitat, due to this Incompetant Environment Agencies Policies.....
A Far better, Investigation as to the Wetlands Versus the Habitation of the Human Species, would be a better Cost Affective Study, after all the Birds can always fly to higher Ground, in the event of their Havitat, being Flooded, a Luxury, not afforded to the Residents of Moorland , Muchelney, Langport, Athelney, etc, and the still rising waters in Somerset, despite the Dutch Pumps, taking Millions of water, now lying on the Levels ,moors and Somerset Pastypure Land, which now after 2 Months underwater is now
DEAD !! Not to recover until, the land is dry enough to Plough and reseed, possibly the Autumn now, so no May Silage, for the farmers to feed their Cattle over the next Winter.....
I am more concerned about the Local Families who will not return to their
Contaminated Homes, for @ least 9 months.........The Environment Agency and the rest of the " Bunnie Huggers" have their Priorities Wrong!!!!!!
Also, my concern is the Deadly Deceases and Paracites that the Bumblebee population, both Wild and Hives, are suffering ???? Being decimated, as if there are No Bee's then there is no Polination of Crops, and we are Fuxxed.....
This Post will fall on Dead Ears as has my Arguement for the Last 8-10 years to Dredge The Parrett............S
till Arguing with the E Agency....Now !!
What are we Coming To, when the Greenies, and the Tree Huggers are Dictating Policies, soon we will all be DOOMED...........!!!
