A YOUNG cook from Williton has scooped third place in the Freedom Food Compassionate Cook Contest for his baking skills.

Hector Hewson and his sister, Katie, entered the competition with his recipe for “Hector’s Scrumptious Chocolate Brownies” video.

In the video, 11-year-old Hector gives viewers a step-by step guide to making his tasty treats.

Thirteen-year-old Katie who attends King’s College in Taunton, filmed and edited the winning entry.

The contest, supported by the Fairtrade Foundation, asked cooks who care about good food and where it comes from to make a short recipe video, using ingredients with the Freedom Food higher welfare label and Fairtrade Foundation labels.

Sophie Wright, TV chef and author who was on the judging panel, said: “It was clear, concise and informative.

“Hector obviously loves to cook and is very enthusiastic about food.

“He uses lots of lovely Freedom Food products and Fairtrade ingredients and I really enjoyed watching him.”

TV chef Paul Merrett added: “I genuinely believed Hector’s compassion for the Freedom Food message.

“I think he is a man to watch.”

Hector, a pupil at Danesfield Middle School, said: “It was such fun making the video, although quite difficult.

“I never thought we would win any prize, let alone be awarded third place.

“I think the contest is a really great idea because our family really care about the food we buy.

“We always look out for products from the RSPCA’s Freedom Food, it’s all about helping farm animals to have a better life.”
