£100,000 King's College amphitheatre project underway
11:00am Wednesday 30th October 2013 in Somerset
WORK is underway to build a state-of-the-art amphitheatre at King’s College in Taunton.
The £100,000 project will see a 300-seater venue built on the lawn outside the existing theatre thanks to a donation from a former pupil, who the school say wishes to remain anonymous.
Headmaster Richard Biggs said: "Having started out as a slightly crazy idea, it is wonderful to see this plan coming to fruition and I am eternally grateful to the former pupil who shared my vision of a stunning piece of performance architecture in the middle of the school and was prepared to make it all possible.
“Not only will the amphitheatre be an exciting space for drama and music, it should also be a useful outdoor classroom and, I hope, a popular gathering place for our pupils. I can't wait to see it up and running."
The facility will be bowl-shaped, with a circular, five-metre diameter stage, surrounded by concentric rings of seating, rising up to ground level.
The area around the amphitheatre will be re-landscaped with trees and pathways, while power laid on for sound and lighting, and the seating will be softly lit at night.
It is hoped the amphitheatre will be formally opened next summer.
