Flu jab delay for patients in Williton after delayed delivery
9:00am Friday 18th October 2013 in Somerset
FLU jab recipients were turned away from Williton surgery on Saturday when they went to get their flu jab after a delayed delivery in the vaccine caused a shortage in the supply.
Two flu vaccine sessions were planned, one for last weekend and one for this weekend.
However, West Somerset Healthcare has had to push the upcoming session back by four weeks.
Patient Geoff Less turned up just after 11am to receive his flu jab but was turned away.
He said: “The session was supposed to be running from 9am to 12pm but when I turned up about 11.15 am I was told that they had run out.”
Geoff said the surgery was busy with many left feeling frustrated.
He added: “I was quite annoyed and speaking to others there they were too because some had travelled quite far and now they have a long wait to get the vaccine.”
Geoff, 64-years-old said he wanted to get his flu jab as soon as possible because he had had open heart surgery and was told to try and make sure he didn’t get a chest infection.
“I’m not too worried at the moment but I use a lot of public transport and that’s a breeding ground for germs, there were a lot of people there older than me that are now exposed for another four weeks.
“There will no doubt be a stampede on November 9; people don’t have a choice but to wait until then.”
A spokesperson for the surgeries said: “West Somerset Healthcare would like to offer their apologies to the small number of patients who were not able to have their flu jab on Saturday October 12.
“Due to circumstances out of our control, our supplies of flu vaccination were limited. “This will not be a problem at our next formerly advertised session and we look forward to seeing all eligible patients then.
“We would encourage our patients to contact us directly if they have any concerns.”
The next flu jab session will be at Watchet Surgery on November 9 from 9am – 12pm.
