THE family of a young student who died suddenly from an undiagnosed heart condition have pledged to try to prevent it happening to others.

Jenny Bucknell died in 2011 aged 23 after living a seemingly normal and healthy life.

Her grandparents, Hillary and Bill Durrant, of Knowle St Giles, have since been raising cash in a bid to stop other families going through the same heartbreak.

Hillary said: “We’ve raised awareness that each week at least 14 youngsters aged between 14 and 35 die in similar circumstances, and many of these deaths could have been prevented had the youngster been able to have an ECG scan prior to undertaking energetic and athletic pastimes, especially on a regular basis.

“We raise funds so every young person may be given the choice of a scan.”

Jenny was studying medicine at Cardiff University and was all set to become a qualified doctor before her unexpected death.

A craft, coffee and cake morning has been arranged at Horton village hall on Saturday, October 19, with the proceeds going to support charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

Some of the family’s friends have also lost loved ones recently in similar circumstances, encouraging them to club together over the summer to make hand-made crafts and raise cash for the charity.

CRY gained widespread publicity last year when Bolton Wanderers footballer Fabrice Muamba suffered a cardiac arrest during a match.

Hillary said: “Please come to have a cuppa and buy crafted birthday or Christmas gifts from the vast variety of hand-made items.

“All profits are entirely for CRY.”

The event runs from 10am to noon and entry costs £2 to include coffee and a slice of cake.
