Residents react to Taunton street gun incident
PEOPLE living in a quiet area of Taunton have told of their fear after they say a man brandished a gun in the street.
The incident happened at around 7.30pm on Sunday at the corner of Shakespeare Avenue and Milton Road.
One terrified homeowner, who lives several doors down from the incident but did not wish to be named, said she called the police after seeing the incident escalate.
She told the County Gazette: “One man in a car pulled up next to a man stood on the pavement and they started having an argument.
“A couple more people went down to see what was going on.
“There was a lot of shouting and then the man that pulled up in his car went back to it and got a handgun out and started pointing it at people.
“I called the police and when they got here they told us to go into our house so we did.”
The woman said she has lived in Shakespeare Avenue for 15 years and had never seen a gun incident in that time.
Jun Revolledo, who has lived in Shakespeare Avenue for 11 years, has three children and said the incident was “worrying”.
He added: “It is quite a nice, quiet area but our children do not like to play outside after school – they would rather play inside the house.”
Another family, who live in Milton Road and wished to remain anonymous, said they realised something was wrong when a police car and a 4x4 were circling the estate for nearly two hours looking for someone.
The family said: “We keep a close eye on our children now and we make sure they are picked up and dropped off at places rather than walking on their own because it is just best to be safe.”
A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm in a public place and for drink-driving in connection with the incident. He has been released on police bail until November, pending further enquiries.
Avon and Somerset are urging witnesses to call them on 101.
