The Globe at North Petherton is staying open, say owners
THE owners of a popular North Petherton pub have reassured people it is staying open and has a long-term future after it was closed for three days last week.
The Globe Inn, in High Street, shut last Monday and did not reopen until Thursday.
The closure was discussed at last week’s meeting of North Petherton Town Council.
Mayor Bill Revans said that councillors and residents were concerned that following the closure of The Swan Inn last year, the heart of North Petherton could have been left with just one other pub, The Lamb Inn.
Councillors even discussed the possibility of applying to Sedge-moor District Council to register The Globe Inn as a “community asset of value” allowing time for a local co-operative to be formed to take over its running should it be closed.
However, the Mercury contacted Punch Taverns, which owns The Globe, and a spokesman said: “We can confirm that The Globe Inn has a long-term future as a pub and our plan is to keep it open, trading and serving the local community.”
The spokesman said the pub had been shut for a few days “to review operational issues”.
Cllr Revans said: “The Globe Inn is situated at the heart of North Petherton and is well used and popular among local people.
“It provides an especially warm welcome to older residents and local tradesman.
“This is a vital resource to prevent social isolation. It hosts local skittle teams and is used socially by our community sports teams.
“This local pub is a genuine hub of the local community.
“With the closure of The Swan Inn, we have just two pubs remaining in North Petherton village and we are anxious to maintain them both."
