Wiveliscombe Tennis Club goes wacky for Guy Wilkes
11:00am Tuesday 3rd September 2013 in Somerset
WIVELISCOMBE Tennis Club went wacky this week in memory of former chairman Guy Wilkes.
More than 30 players were in action on Sunday (September 1), all at the same time, as players paid tribute to the much-missed Guy, who died from pancreatic cancer last year.
People of all ages lined up on court for three hours of silly games loosely based on tennis, and a centre court battle complete with line judges and ball-children was made even more tense by the absence of an essential ingredient... tennis balls.
Then even racquets were abandoned by adults who joined youngsters for a 16-a-side round of wacky tennis.
A bench commemorating Guy's contribution then made its way on to the court for the prize giving, despite nobody recalling any winners or losers.
Actual tennis returns to the club on Sunday, September 15 for finals day - if you'd like to join, contact secretary Jeremy Toye at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
