WILDLIFE rescue workers have helped free an overzealous starling who got himself stuck inside a bird feeder.
Staff from Secret World in East Huntspill were called out by bird lover, Amanda Hawkins, after she spotted ‘Stan the starling’ trapped in the device at her home in Chilton Trinity, Bridgwater.
She said: “At first I thought a bit of bin liner had got caught in the feeder but when I went to investigate I surprised to find it was actually a starling.”
Amanda tried to free Stan with a pair of wire cutters but the wire mesh had become embedded in the bird’s wings, so she called Secret World Wildlife Rescue and brought him in, still trapped in the feeder.
An experienced member of the animal care team managed to free Stan, who is now recovering before being released.
Charity founder Pauline Kidner said: “This was definitely one of the more unusual of the many thousands of bird rescues we have been involved with over the years.”
