Bridgwater swimming pool opening just a week away!
7:00am Monday 18th February 2013 in Somerset By Matthew Colledge
BRIDGWATER’S three-and-a-half year wait for a community swimming pool is about to end.
The town has been without a pool since The Splash was demolished in August 2009.
But on March 1, a new six-lane, 25-metre pool will open next to Chilton Trinity School.
The timetable has already gone on-line – click here.
It includes parent and toddler sessions, Aquafit and “inflatafun” classes, and two weekly slots for Bridgwater Swimming Club, which has been based at Quantock Lodge in Over Stowey for the past three years.
Mercury Chief Reporter Matthew Colledge, who was given a sneak preview of the facility this week, said: “Walking through the doors of the Trinity Sports and Leisure centre, it was obvious there is a real buzz about the new pool opening.
“Reception staff were busy answering calls from people enquiring about the pool and Ricky Hayes, swim co-ordinator, told me there are already around 400 people on the waiting list for swimming lessons – he expects the number of swimmers on roll to double that at the Splash, where he used to work.”
Sam Taylor, Sedgemoor District Council’s public relations officer for the pool project, said the opening ceremony would be a real community occasion, with children from local schools and groups invited along to join in the fun.
She said: “It’s about getting community groups involved and pressing home that this is not a school pool, it’s a community pool.”
Keep reading the Mercury for more news on the pool opening, and of course, we’ll be there on the big day itself.

I wonder if the Labour Cllrs & the Bridgwater Mayor (labour Cllr ) & Deputy Town Mayor (Also a labour Cllr )will attend the opening of this swimming pool ...It happens to be in a Labour held Ward Cllrs Richards & Lerry ( Cllr Lerry happens to be the Labour leader )
I wonder if Sedgemoor District Council will invite the leaders of the Forward backward group ...to the opening !!
Now where have I heard that before??
What a fantastic Pool we know have, if those ex Splash users want to "Splash" they now have an option to swim also, they can go to Brean, if they want a Fun Pool. This is what, myself and the fellow residents, have been asking for since the Lido Closure.
I certainly will be using it, and before the 'Comment's come Swimming in, I shall be paying the Full cost as everyone else, no Free Season Tickets for Ex Councillors, or backhanders, from the Contractors, or anyone else.
Chilton Pool, made possible by Sedgemoor Conservative Group, opposed by All Labour Councillors, and of course Bridgwater ( Backward) Forward Group., and the Liberals on SDC.
I must Fly off now, to Taunton Crem, to say found Farewell to John (Chopper) Chorley, RIP, another 59 year old, gone but not forgotten. 1953

Bridgy Old Boy..what are your views , do you think the Labour Cllrs & Mayor will attend the opening ....
Have you also noticed the absence of comments from the other Labour Cllrs,
Who were shouting there voices against the new pool, Tesco's , new hospital, in fact any thing they could !
Front page of this weeks ' Mercury' quote, Town Divided, no it isn't, should have read, success for Tesco's after 3 years of negotiations, to achieve Planning Consent.
But hey, who was walking away from the Inspectorate meeting, on Tuesday, on Wembdon Rd, guess who Cllr Brian
Smedley, high jacking the Mercury Reporter, so his Labour Yarn will appear in the Mercury next week!!
But then that's nothing new, the special friendship between the 2 Groups, labour & the Mercury reporters.

Good news but can't help wondering what was wrong with the old swimming pool we had. Apart from the fact that Tescos wanted the land it was built on.

I'll keep my post on topic and refrain from petty personal jibes....
Good news but can't help wondering what was wrong with the old swimming pool we had. Apart from the fact that Tescos wanted the land it was built on.
An old pool failing to meet present Health & Saftey requirements, costing the £700k a year to be open and subsidise users.
So SDC had to make the decision, a hard one, as I've posted b4, we would have loved to have built a New Pool and opened it whilst keeping the Splash open.
You know, all across the Country the financial restraints facing every Council, on their finances.
Every year for the last 10 yrs Council have to reduce costs year on year by what is known as "the Gerswin Formular,- 3% each year savings, on top of that, there is then less monies from Central Government, because of Blair & Browns Policies, when in Power, the Banking Crisis, the European Unions Problems in Member Countries. All this, is the reason why Councils have to sell assets, land property to pay for new infrastructure projects, if Councils go down the route of borrowing, they can, but for every
£1.000.000 borrowed, over 20yrs the interest payable is £100k per £1 million
Borrowed. So any Council would be fool hardy to go down that route..
You say, that Tesco's wanted the Northgate Land,???No, at the time that we were deliberating as to how we could, pay for the repairs needed for the Splash, and how we could utilise our Assetts to the best ability, as this is the Guide Rules by which Councillors and Councils are liable, personally to protect the ratepayers, Towns, interest. Whilst trying to maximise the scope of commitment, without detriment to the Community, so it is a fine balancing act.
You can either do nothing, build nothing, look Backwards, instead of looking Forward !!!!
I do not apologise for the length of this post, as it is not something that can be explained in a couple of sentences.
We SDC, along with SCC, made this parcel of Northgate available as a substantial plot, offered on the open market, as I've indicated b4, we had 3 expressions of interest originally, which, in the end after scrutiny of the Bidders and their intentions for the Site, left on Tesco's in the Game, by no means a Game. Serious money on offer to the both Councils, in the middle of a recession !!! Do you think that, we should have turned away from
£11+ Million. Yes we made the decision to build the New Pool , committing the Council to a £6.3 Million project, that if we made the decision to have it built on land @ Chilton, we saved £1.2 Million on build cost, as the foundation could be started with existing contractors companies, engaged in new Build School programme,Win Win situation.
If we had delayed, then the pool would not have been viable, if we had listened to the Labour Cllrs, and Bridgwater Backward Forward , where would we be now.
Splash, would have cost £700k x 3 Years. Then refurbishment of up to £4 Million, to bring it up to spec.
Look at the £6 Million, new Pool.
Who made the Right Decision, I know where my decision made along with my Conservative Councillor s is Correct! infatically !!!!
Vote Labour, go Backward!!!!!! They deliver Nothing!! For Town Or the District....Penny Wise , Pound Foolish...
