A SCHOOL near Wedmore has re-opened today (January 31) after a week-long battle to repair damage caused by a large fire.
Hugh Sexey Middle School, in Blackford, was evacuated last Wednesday (January 23) after the blaze broke out in an electrical cabinet.
No pupils were hurt in the incident, but lessons were disrupted while workmen tended to the damage.
Writing on the school’s website today, head teacher Jenny Venning said: “Everything is going well here. Children have been very calm and sensible as we sort new rooms and new timetables.”
Two classrooms are still inaccessible. One is scheduled for deep cleaning and the other is predicted to be unusable until after Easter.
Lessons are running normally and the power, phones and some computers are also functioning.
Ms Venning said the majority of items belonging to children in classroom 8GDA were still on one piece, having only sustained water or smoke damage.
“The fact that most items are not burnt to a cinder should enable the contractors to retrieve belongings and complete inventories,” she added.
“We are currently in discussion with the local authority on the next steps.”
