ALL 192 branches of camera retailer Jessops closed for the final time today (January 11), just two days after the firm went into administration.

The company's stores in Somerset included one in Taunton and another in Yeovil. 

Jessops' online operations have also stopped.

The firm employed 2,000 staff nationwide.

Edward Williams, Robert Jonathan Hunt and David Matthew Hammond, joint administrators, said: "Its core marketplace has seen a significant decline in 2012 and forecasts for 2013 indicate that this decline would continue."

Disgusting they they are allowed to keep items people have bought or payed a deposit on as that in my opinion is tantamount to theft, i bet the taxmans first in the queue again.

Gift cards are designed to cash in when people lose them or can't use them for some reason, eg. when the retailer goes bust. No sane person should ever use a retailer as a bank.

What's the issue with the tax man being first. Our taxes pay for NHS, schools benefits.

I would never but have had refunds in them and been given them as gesture of goodwill or deal with a company.

Well if you was made redundant and owed wages and redundancy money I don't expect you would be to pleased to find HMRC was first in line ahead of you would you?

This isn't surprising in the slightest, even their Internet site offered better deals than the walk in stores, so all anyone did was use it to view/test products and purchase elsewhere. If the company wanted to keep going they should've switched to Internet only sales months/years ago and offered the best prices on the net, or at least price matched. People like to buy from a trusted seller rather than trying to dodge grey imports through eBay. If they had done this along with a website upgrade, live chat, better comparison ability etc, theme I'm sure they have continued to trade creating other jobs in the uk, such as warehouse, delivery staff, telesales, online experts etc.

why cant there be an option for you to press when your buying online to indicate which shop the product came from ,ie if your nearest shops jessops in taunton indicate that you wanted it from there then get the profits go to that the jessops shop exc ,then buying online wouldnt be such a problem for some shops as it would still show on there profits !!

You ever heard of the insolvency service? Government funded agency that pay you redundancy and outstanding holiday pay in just such a a situation.

There are limits to what you get but I once was made redundant and they pay you a reasonable amount of money,

You wouldn't get the this discount for buying online so it wouldn't work as once you bring a shop into the equation you have staff, rent and taxes pay.

it might save some jobs thou as web buying wouldnt shut so many shops that way as the designated shop would still get the money !!if peeps knew that there money was being kept local and still save the cost of fuel they might not worry about a couple quid cheeper if it would save jobs !!

I think it is a historic shame for Taunton. The camera shop on the corner of St James St was previously Greys and that had been there forever!

Anyone know when it first was a camera shop? 100 years ago perhaps?

Ah well, might as well embrace change - we cannot stop it!

It is indeed a tragedy all round, for the customers whose goods are lost into a black hole and for the employees who've lost their jobs. Thos employees won't be contributing to the Exchequer again through their payroll taxes, so you and me will be sustaining them.

On the subject of the taxman taking his cut from the assets (assuming there are some), this will presumably be more tax than will have been received from eBay and Amazon, both of whom will have contributed to Jessops' demise!
