THIS Christmas and New Year was tinged with a diamond celebration for one couple - after they notched up 60 years of marriage.

Eric and Peggy Cartwright, from Creech St Michael tied the knot of December 20 in 1952 at St Bartholomew's Church in Crewkerne as the pair lived their when they were younger.

Eric, 85, worked for the electricity board, while Peggy, 84, worked in a shirt factory, before they both moved to the Taunton area in 1984.

They celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary with a surprise party at Creech St Michael village hall set up by daughter Jane.

Peggy said: “We have had our ups and downs but we always sort it out and we have lived a wonderful life.

“It was a lovely surprise party and a shock when we got a letter from The Queen too.”

Peggy is also known in the area for her commitments at the village short mat bowls club and the women's institute.
