AT 3.45pm, a second collision occurred at the end of the tailbacks on the northbound carriageway at Hele Straight involving four cars and a HGV lorry after a shunt.
An articulated lorry, a black Ford Focus, a black Honda Accord and a black Honda Jazz crashed.
A 47-year-old man from Shropshire, who was driving a Ford Focus, sustained serious injuries and died at the scene.

THE latest CCTV images as traffic is diverted off the motorway between junction 27 and 28.

DEVON and Cornwall Police said the camper van was travelling southbound when it veered into the central reservation and across onto the northbound carriageway before colliding with the Tigra.
Both drivers of the vehicles have sustained serious injuries and are trapped in the vehicles.
Fire crews are at the scene and are currently trying to free the casualties. The Devon Air Ambulance has landed on the motorway and will take the injured to hospital shortly.
One lane on the southbound carriageway is open, the other two are closed, and the northbound carriageway is still closed.
There is no estimated time as to when the motorway will be fully re-opened.

A STATEMENT from Devon and Cornwall police said:
"At 1.35 pm, emergency services were called the scene of a two vehicle, injury road traffic collision.
"It appears that there are two casualties, one of whom is being freed by the fire service.
"It is anticipated that the southbound carriageway will be closed until 3 pm and the motorway will be totally closed for the air ambulance at about 2.05 pm."

A CAMPER van and a car were involved in a crash on the M5 between junctions 28 and 29 this afternoon (December 5).
The incident happened at around 2.30pm today and the M5 is closed in both directions between the Cullompton and Exeter junctions.
Diversions are in place and all southbound traffic is advised to leave the M5 at J28 and follow the triangle symbol via the B3181 to rejoin the M5 at J29.
Northbound traffic advised to leave the M5 at J29 and follow the circle symbol via the B3181 to rejoin the M5 at J28.
The air ambulance is currently on the motorway.
