CHRISTMAS lights at a Burnham cul-de-sac have become the talk of the town.

Crowds braved the cold this month to watch a total of eight homes at Trinity Close switch on hundreds of festive lights.

Hazel Gardner, who decorated her home at number three, told the Weekly News: “We’ve been doing it every year for the last eight or nine years.

“The tree alone has 40 sets of lights on it and the house has around 90,000 bulbs. It took about a week to put up.

“It’s something we have always done and something we will continue to do. The fact that it raises money for charity is an added bonus.”

Last year the switch-on raised more than £5,000 for charity. This year’s benefactors are PETAL – The Christine Woodberry Memorial Trust, BARB and Musgrove Park Hospital’s baby unit.

Hazel added: “PETAL was set up after a neighbour’s wife died from cancer. Another neighbour is a member of BARB and another neighbour trained as a midwife at Musgrove’s baby unit.

“There’s a great sense of community spirit in this neighbourhood. We get a lot of people coming up just to see the lights, which is a part of Christmas for them.”

Vocal entertainment was delivered by Curtain Call stage school to mark the switch-on this year. The lights will go on from 4.15pm to 10pm nightly until January 6.
