A HALLOWE'EN Party held in Chard last night has been hailed a big success.

Hundreds of youngsters and parents descended on Chard Rugby Club for a party before walking off into the town where a number of shops and businesses had stayed open especially to take part in the 'trick of treat' festivities.

Michelle Young, of Razooks hair salon in Holyrood Street, Chard, organised the event and told the News she was delighted with how well it had gone - especially considering the awful weather.

"We were worried that nobody was going to turn up because of the rain," she said. "But we've been amazed at how well it has gone."

Michelle admitted that the bad weather had made it 'stressful' but the planning and hard work had paid off.

She said that last year her children were left disappointed when they went 'trick or treating' and only found a few people who answered the door.

No such worries this year as shops and traders stayed open armed with sweets and other goodies to give to the visiting children who were all dressed in suitable chilling Hallowe'en outfits.

Michelle said she would like to thank everyone who took part and supported the event.

Her husband Tony added: "It's been brilliant and a little bit of rain wasn't going to spoil the party!"

Such was the success of the event that not everyone could get into the rugby club in Essex Close because of the numbers.

There is already talk about a similar event being held next year with the party being held at the Guildhall.

See next week's News for a full photo round-up of last night's Hallowe'en festivities.

This was a brilliant event - a great idea brought to fruition but the dedication and hard work of just a few people. I have never been keen to allow my children to knock on strangers doors and to accept sweets from them, but I felt this event was a safe way to celebrate Halloween, and my children were delighted to be able to join in this event and had a great time. Thank you so much to Michelle and everyone else who organised this event.
