Young chefs show skills in Rotary competition
1:26pm Tuesday 30th October 2012 in Somerset
JUDGES faced a tough decision at the seventh annual Young Chef Competition in Highbridge.
Hugh Mackay, president of Burnham Rotary Club thanked Andy Owen, Headteacher of The King Alfred School, and his Food Technology staff for allowing the competition to take place in the school.
Seven competitors, six year nine students and one year ten, were given a budget of £10 to plan and prepare a two course meal with a healthy eating theme in under two hours.
The judges, Amy Hunt, of Weston’s Oak and Glass Restaurant, and Sarah McClean, from Woodlands Country Hotel in Brent Knoll, said: “The standard of the cooking was very high and it was a very difficult task to choose first and second places.”
First prize and the Young Chef Cup was awarded to Madeline Francis, and the second place certificate was awarded to Tanisha Oatley-Summers. Lewis Clarke, Sophie Hall, Bethany Jones, Ben Leigh and David Young were awarded certificates.
Hugh Mackay thanked Beverley Gore, Head of Health, Textiles and Food Technology, and her team for organising the event and presented 54 new chopping boards to the Food Technology Department.
