Shop owners warned to be vigilant after Burnham break-ins
3:30pm Saturday 27th October 2012 in Somerset By Kirsty James
Sgt Ian Kennett
SHOP owners in Burnham are being warned to take extra precautions after a spate of break-ins in the area.
The caution comes after a Greggs bakery and the Tickle Your Taste Buds cafe in the High Street were both targeted over the same weekend this month.
Neighbourhood Police Team Sergeant Ian Kennett told the Weekly News: “The cafe was broken into on Saturday, October 13, and a charity collection box was taken from a Greggs bakery the same weekend.”
Thieves found no cash in the till at the cafe and left empty-handed.
The break-ins come just weeks after another incident at the Bay View Cafe where a large amount of cash was taken by thieves who also caused around £2,000 worth of damage.
Len Cameron, who runs Tickle Your Taste Buds with his wife, Julie, is urging store owners in the area to be extra vigilant.
He told the Weekly News: “Thieves seem to be targeting similar places because Bay View was hit a while ago too.
“They searched all our cupboards but they didn’t get any cash because we don’t leave it in the till overnight. Most businesses don’t but I’d also recommend people check security measures such as their alarm systems just in case.”
Sgt Kennett said there was currently no definite link between the incidents but he has reminded businesses they can contact police for crime prevention advice and take part in businesses crime surveys.
Anyone who has information about these incidents can call police on 101.
