Torbay 'Get on yer bike' family cycle and scooter day
10:05am Friday 14th September 2012 in Devon
Organisers of a family cycle and scooter fun day in Torbay hope a recent boom in cycling following the success of British cyclists in the Tour de France and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will attract a large turn-out for the event.
The event on Saturday, September22, organised by Torbay is being staged on Paignton Green and nearby Parkfield between 10am and 4pm.
Family cycle and scooter rides, training sessions and displays will be held throughout the day, with the main aim of encouraging people of all ages to get on two wheels.
Mid Devon Cycle Club, Sustrans, Parkfield and Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust are all supporting the fun day.
The cycle club will be hosting a family cycle and scooter ride around the North Green between 12 noon and 3pm. People can register for free from 10am, and are being invited to raise sponsorship for the event's adopted charity, Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, or for their chosen charity if they prefer.
They will be invited to complete as many laps as they can -- ten laps covering 7.5 miles up to 40 laps totalling 30 miles. The section of Esplanade Road between Colin Road and Garfield Road will be closed between 11.30am and 3.30pm while the cycle ride takes place, and traffic diversions will be clearly signed.
At Parkfield, there will be many activities to showcase this regional facility, including BMX and other attractions on the track and inside the building. The day will culminate in the spectacular Madd Gear UK BMX and Scooter Team, including two of the world's best BMX and scooter names between 2pm and 4pm.
Although the event is aimed mainly at encouraging people on to two wheels, there will also be some unicycle coaching sessions.
