Football no excuse for drunken violence, Devon authorities warn

A MESSAGE that football and drinking are not an excuse for anti-social and abusive behaviour is being sent out in Mid Devon.

The East & Mid Devon Community Safety Partnership has produced and distributed advisory posters declaring ‘alcohol is no excuse’ while highlighting the links between alcohol and domestic abuse, particularly during the football season.

With the Euro 2012 tournament underway, police are encouraging football fans across Mid Devon to enjoy the festivities without getting violent . . . or face the consequences.

Julia Ryder, Mid Devon Council’s community safety officer, said: “The launch of the poster links well with the consumption of alcohol during football games.

“During Euro 2012 most people will have a good time and behave responsibly, but some behave in an abusive way, which causes distress to their partners and family.

“We want the abuse to stop, but we also want to let people know help’s available for those who suffer such abuse, or anyone wishing to get confidential help and advice.”

Devon and Cornwall Police are also urging fans gathering in busy areas to watch matches to be on the lookout and stay alert.

Supt Dave Sumner, who is leading the police operation during the tournament, said: “Violence, football-related disorder or hate crime of any sort will not be tolerated.

“Those who create disorder can expect to be dealt with firmly. We’ll arrest such people and seek football banning orders in addition to any punishment a court may impose.”
