AN ambitious £3million ‘Devon Centre’ in Cullompton welcomed its first official visitors this week.

The centre, called The Hayridge, has replaced two Devon County Council buildings in the town – the library and the adult learning centre.

After a special preview afternoon on Wednesday, the centre opened its doors on schedule yesterday (Thursday).

Along with a library four times the size of Cullompton’s previous one, the centre will serve as a ‘gateway’ to other local services by providing a customer access point and accommodating services provided by Mid Devon District Council.

The scheme also includes a cafe, courtyard garden and facility for people with mobility difficulties.

Cllr Roger Croad, Devon County Council cabinet member with responsibility for libraries, said: “The opening of The Hayridge marks a new generation in community facilities and is something the whole community can celebrate as they have been instrumental in every stage of the planning and design of this ambitious development.

“From the start of the project we have been keen for everyone to be involved and it has been very exciting seeing this remarkable building take shape.

“The result is really impressive and I am delighted that we have worked together so successfully to create a space that will provide the services this community needs.”

A range of events during the next fortnight will showcase what The Hayridge has to offer.

They include a film night for teenagers, family history workshops, beginners’ French and German classes, drawing skills sessions, author visits and a special baby ‘bounce and rhyme’ group.
