SHOPPERS are being urged to help spread a little Christmas cheer in Crediton by adopting a “think local” ethos to support the town’s stores.
Organisers behind a long-standing campaign, called “Crediton First”, are encouraging the local community to make the most of the wide variety of shops and services available in the High Street.
The scheme features a leaflet, featuring a number of local shops and businesses located in Crediton, being delivered across the town to highlight what is on offer to local consumers in the run up to Christmas, and beyond.
In an effort to promote the local businesses, the leaflet features the name, details and photographs of a number of the town centre shops that are taking part in the campaign.
Organisers hope the move will encourage shoppers to think twice before travelling to hubs such as Exeter for their gifts, and instead making the most of the stores on their doorstep.
Crediton First campaign was launched last year by local campaigner Mel Stride and Peter Hare-Scott, the leader of Mid Devon council.
Mr Stride, who is also the prospective Conservative parliamentary candidate for Central Devon, said: “The coming weeks represent a critical moment for the health of our High Street.
“Many local traders rely on the Christmas trade in order to survive."
Mr Stride and his team will also be delivering a calendar at the same time as the Crediton First leaflet.
The compact calendar features a range of useful telephone numbers for local services, including the local authorities, emergency services, schools and hospitals.
He added : “We hope that this is something that local people will value as a handy ‘at-a-glance’ directory for key local services.”
