THE Army is throwing open the doors to the public at Wyvern Barracks in Exeter where they will be able to take part in physical exercises alongside hopeful new recruits for the first time.

The special Army Fitness Challenge event, on Saturday, April 25, will allow people to test themselves to see if they have what it takes to join the Army or simply to test they physical fitness and find out more about Army life and careers.

Warrant Officer (2) Russ Jarman, of Exeter Armed Forces Recruitment Office, said: "This is a chance for people to take part in our fitness assessment, which is held only once a month for applicants currently going through the application process and preparing to join the British Army."

The highlights of the morning will include a one-and-a-half mile run, a 150 metre walk carrying jerry cans full of water and a series of exercises to test upper body strength.

Participants can chose which activities they wish to take part in, but will be encouraged to do all three.

W/O Jarman added: "The Army Fitness Challenge is there to get a real taste of what to expect from the physical standards required to pass our selection process and be eligible for all the benefits and variety of job choices the British Army can offer.

"It's not a test and your results will not be recorded.

"This is a one-off opportunity for people in the community who might be considering a career with the British Army to get an opportunity to get a feel for the physical standards required to pass our selection process.

"It's not a case of passing or failing, but it will be great fun for all those who take part."

During the event the public will also be able to talk to serving soldiers about their experiences and find out about the 140 different jobs available at recuiting stands.

All those taking part will also receive a free DVD film about the Army.

The Army Fitness Challenge is free but a discretionary £1 donation is suggested in aid of the Help4Heroes charity.
