A SCOUT group from Tiverton will celebrate a landmark anniversary by burying a time capsule at a building site in the district.

The Cubs of 2nd Tiverton Scout group are looking forward to celebrating the 100 years birthday of Cubs in December this year by creating and then burying the capsule at Taylor Wimpey’s Rackenford Meadow development.

Members from the 2nd Tiverton Scouts group, which is based nearby to the development, visited Rackenford Meadow on at the start of June for the burial, which was filled with special items selected by the scouts, cubs and younger beavers.

The capsule included the cubs’ 100-year badge, a thank you letter the cubs received from the Queen after the cubs sent her a birthday card, a leaflet of 100 things for the cubs to do in 2016, copies of the programme, photographs, a completed knotting board done in 2016 and other memorabilia.

Jan Dawe, assistant group Scout leader at 2nd Tiverton Scouts, said: “Robert Baden-Powell (1857-1941), began the scouting movement in 1907 at a camp in Dorset.

"We now have more than 450,000 young people in the UK enjoying new adventures in the scouting movement and plenty more across the world.

£We have photographic evidence that there were scouts in Tiverton in 1921.

"We will always welcome new adults who would like to join the leadership team.”

Clare Brimble, sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey, said: “We were delighted to invite members of Tiverton District Scouts to bury a time capsule at our Rackenford Meadow development.

“The scouts, cubs and beavers have done a wonderful job filling the time capsule with memorable items, which is a great way for them to reflect on what life is like today and how it might change in the future – as well as celebrate the 100th birthday of Cubs.

“The time capsule also reflects the importance that we, as a local housebuilder, place on investing in communities for the benefit of local people now and for generations to come.”
