STAFF from the NHS community rehabilitation team in Tiverton will be inviting people to test their balance at the Mid Devon Show on Saturday (July 25).

Physiotherapists, occupational therapists and support workers will be holding a balance challenge where the public can try a range of activities which become progressively harder, including walking on ‘hedgehog’ steps and standing on foam bouncing a balloon on a racket.

People can see how far they can get around the circuit or speak to the team for more information on simple activities they can do at home to improve their balance.

The team, which is based at Tiverton and District Hospital, also hopes to run a health trail where people are set questions on health and fitness with the answers dotted around exhibitors’ sites.

A children’s trail will invite youngsters to do an activity at each location, such as standing on one leg for 10 seconds.

The team also ran a balance challenge at the Tiverton Balloon and Music Festival last weekend.

They were joined by representatives from Petroc Fitness Centre, which offered a free month of membership for the fastest time to row 100 metres on a rowing machine.

The team and the fitness centre are part of AcTiv, the group which aims to promote health by encouraging people in and around Tiverton to become more active.

AcTiv, which was set up by Tiverton GP Frank O’Kelly, also includes representatives from sports clubs, Exe Valley Leisure Centre, Age UK, the children’s centre and more.

AcTiv now comes under the umbrella of the Tiverton Learning Co-operative, working closely with Active Devon.

The Mid Devon Show will take place at Knightshayes, near Tiverton, for the first time after relocating from Post Hill.
