TWO Tiverton students have learned that hard work pays off as they completed a live-brief for a business on their work experience placement.

Tiverton High School Year 10 students, Jay Lodge and Chris Warren, joined Tiverton-based marketing communications agency Oxygen for a week.

Thrown in at the deep end they met local plumber Alex Pelton of JNP Plumbing & Heating in Wellington with a brief to build him a website in five days.

Mr Pelton approached Oxygen looking to take his first steps towards developing an online presence after seeing the work that Oxygen carried out for a range of local businesses.

After agreeing to take part in a project for the Tiverton students, Mr Pelton met the students at the Oxygen offices and briefed them on what he wanted from a new website.

On Friday afternoon Mr Pelton was duly presented with a state-of-the-art new website and was very pleased with the way in which the students handled his requirements.

He said: “Both boys ensured 100% satisfaction at every stage of this project which is exactly how JNP approach every plumbing job we carry out. I was very pleased to deal with fellow professionals – and delighted with our new website.”

With guidance from Oxygen's web design team the students developed the website using the Wordpress open source system.

They also wrote the copy for the site and took photographs of a JNP Plumbing van - the site is now live: www.jnpplumbing.co.uk

Oxygen’s senior web developer, Paul Barrett, said: “We were delighted to have the boys with us on a work placement. It’s a great opportunity for them to learn valuable skills and time management.

“We value our ongoing relationship with the local high school and enjoy seeing young talent thrive in our busy working environment.”

He added: “Working with Oxygen opens up a host of possibilities for the students and allows them to gain an insight into how communication barriers in the workplace can be broken down.

“It’s a positive experience for everyone.”
