PEOPLE in Exeter are being warned about a telephone ‘council tax’ scam.
A number of residents have been contacted by a caller pretending to be from the City Council.
The caller has then told the person that they are due a refund on their council tax due to a historic band reduction, asking for their bank details so that the money can be paid into their account.
Exeter City Council said today that the calls were a hoax and no-one should pass on their bank details to these callers.
“This is a scam and we would never ask for people’s bank details over the phone. If anyone receives such a call we would ask them to hang up immediately and contact the police.”
