A specialist rescue team was called out on Saturday after a report a horse had slipped down a bank into brambles at Littlehempston.
Fire Control mobilised the team from Camelshead and one appliance from Totnes, alongside a local vet.
A fire service spokesman said: "The horse had slipped down a bank into brambles so crews secured the horse from slipping further.
"Crews made efforts to stand the horse using strops, lines and small tools."
The horse was left in the care of the vet and owner.
