Applications are now open for people in Devon to apply for grants from Crimebeat funds, sponsored by the High Sheriff of Devon.

Awarded to individuals or groups, grants of up to £1000 are available to people whose project will have a positive impact on the local community and will help cut crime.

Of particular relevance are initiatives which can positively influence young people who are at risk of offending, engage in anti social behaviour, are subject to drug or alcohol abuse, or who regularly skip school.

Successful projects can vary from helping elderly people make their homes more secure, preventing vandalism in schools, to running a non-alcohol youth club for young people. These are just a few ideas and there is no limit to the possibilities.

Funding for Crimebeat derives from money recovered from criminals via POCA (Proceeds of Crime Act) and seizure of assets (Police Property Act).

Chief Superintendent Paul Davies from Devon and Cornwall Police said “Crimebeat grants give local people the opportunity to do something that benefits those around them and create safer communities. I’m delighted to be able to support this initiative with money recovered through the Police Property Act and Proceeds of Crime Act and ensure this money is back in the community where it belongs”.

Crimebeat is a national initiative which aims to empower young people to make a real difference in their local area by encouraging them to get involved in community projects. They strive to provide opportunities for young people to use their energy and imagination to develop crime prevention initiatives and advance education about the cause and effect of crime, as well as raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol, drug and solvent abuse.

There are two types of grants available, Connection Grants of up to £1000 and Action Grants of between £1000-£3000.

Closing dates for applications are 15th December 2014 for Action Grants and 15th January 2015 for Connection Grants.
